Please join Extra Space Storage in congratulating Kent McKenzie, who is retiring from Extra Space on June 30, 2024. Kent has been an integral member of our team since 1996, marking nearly 28 years of dedicated service.

We asked Kent to reflect on his time at Extra Space Storage. Here is what he had to say.

When did you start at Extra Space Storage?

I began my storage career with Storage USA in 1996 and transitioned to Extra Space in 2005 following the acquisition.

What brought you to Extra Space Storage?

Prior to my venture into self-storage, I spent 15 years with KB Toys. Seeking a change from retail, I responded to a blind ad and, despite my initial misconceptions about self-storage, was persuaded by conversations with Storage USA leaders, John George, Mike Kenney, and Karl Haas. I have never looked back since beginning my self storage career and have been happy ever since.

What kept you at Extra Space Storage all these years?

It goes back to people. I get to work with a lot of wonderful people on a daily basis at every level of the organization. Our great people are what really separates Extra Space and makes us stand out in the industry. I have seen team members advance from Assistant Managers to Divisional Vice Presidents and other positions in the company. Helping others achieve their career goals has brought me immense fulfillment.

Do you have any parting advice for your Extra Space Storage coworkers?

Live the Extra Space values and you will be in great shape to have a great career here. Our values of integrity, passion, innovation, teamwork, and excellence encompass who we are and will help you in your career at Extra Space.

What are you looking forward to in retirement?

I look forward to spending more time with my wife of 43 years. We plan to enjoy central Oregon, the coast, and are considering a trip this fall to either Australia or Machu Picchu.
